Today, D. Manuela from Quinta do Seixo, taught us how to clean our teeth with Sage.
We all rubbed our teeth and agreed on how smooth our teeth felt.
Dhruv was impressed and asked if they would smell like that forever.
You can find the answer in the video

Curls
We were painting today. The paper curled and I took the opportunity to show how we could flatten it again.
Someone asked what 'curl' meant.
I explained, giving several examples, one of which was:
João has curly hair.
Dhruv asks, "Did you go to the hairdresser to make the curls forever?"

I want to be...
Suhani was helping another child with some maths and I asked if she wanted to be a teacher. She answers, "No, I want to be a hairdresser."
João makes the comment: "I want to be a teacher."
I asked João why he wanted to be a teacher and his answer was:
"I like to learn." (that is the best answer and I do agree, we learn all the time)
Zé Pedro, "I want to work at McDonald's
Grace said, "I want to be a doctor."
Maria said, "I want to be a teacher too."
Lourenço without being asked said, "I want to be a boy."

A challenge
Maria saw a sample for a possible craft activity
"I don't know what it is, but I want to make one."

You three ways
Today the children were writing a message.
They needed the word: 'You'
Maria spelt it: ioo
Suhani spelt it: yo
Rodrigo spelt it: yoo
It will be interesting to find out who remembers
the correct spelling tomorrow.

That was difficult! Phew
Yesterday children were folding BIG sheets of tissue paper to make the Truffula Tree tufts, when Sofia sighs and says: "That was difficult!""It is difficult to fold those sheets, but you tried and you did it. If you try you can do...", I was interrupted by Rodrigo: "ANYTHING."
Yes it is so true:
If you try, you can do anything!

Luca does not like onions
Today we were writing a list of instructions for Luca's new friends in France.
So far so good.
On one piece of paper:
I read: Luca does not like Maria?
(it was meant to read, once finished: Luca does not like onions).
Awkward look from Maria.
Luca pipes up from the back, "I like Maria a little bit."

Word of the week
'Because' was a word discovered as a group this week.
Inês included "bicoz" in her writing about winter and snow.

The importance of Physical Activity
In Physical Education we were going round in a circuit:
balancing on a beam, pulling our bodies with arm strength, jumping on the mini trampoline, doing a somersault and climbing over an obstacle. After some rounds, some children where panting and I asked if they were getting tired. Before anyone could say anything about the benefits of exercise, Grace shouts from across the gym,
"Getting tired is fun!"
Photographs were taken by Clara.
This is what we are aiming at with somersaults:

Learn and Remember
Today in our group reading we were looking at some non-decodable words:
me to here I are
he do there you
she so where
we go
be
I said, "we had to take a 'photograph' of these words in our heads.
We have to learn these words".
Suhani pipes up: "We need to learn and remember!"

When I grow up I want to be...
We were learning how to read and spell:
me
he
she
we
be
We thought of sentences using those words.
I said, "When Grace grows up she wants to be a doctor."
Suhani quickly added, "and I want to be a princess."
I winked and said, "You already are a princess!"

Use of Glue
On the way to the bathroom with glue on his hands, Rodrigo complained to D. Emília that I am always telling the children to use glue and that one day his fingers might remain stuck together. He said that it was dangerous!

Giggles
Lourenço and Zé Pedro were giggling while they were drawing.
I looked over and they giggled some more.
Giggles continue.
I walk over.
The boys look up with broad smiles.
"Estávamos a falar em inglês!"
More giggles...
This was funny, but very true. The children are starting to talk
spontaneously among themselves in English. Well done!

Armstrong and lice
We heard a song by Louis Armstrong and Dhruv was very impressed, he said, "wow ele é forte!" (he is strong).
Today I reminded **** to tie her hair as there are cases of head lice in school (as well as it being a school rule). Luca asked, "Os totós têm um cheiro especial para afastar os piolhos?" (Do the rubber bands have a special smell to detract lice?"

Badger, skunk and anteater
In the story Lourenço brought to school today there was a badger.
Because a badger (texugo) is not a familiar animal I showed them a photograph. (below)

Maria said it was a skunk (hence the next photo)
We talked about what a badger would eat and it got called an anteater.
So out comes a photo of an anteater!
I explained how the anteater uses its long nose and long tongue to collect the ants.
Lourenço said: Eia, parece um aspirador! (it is like a vacuum cleaner).

Can you talk about how these animals compare to each other?
In what way are they similar? How do they differ?

Playing with sounds
In the last couple of days we had 2 fantastic spelling contributions
ielo by Rodrigo (yellow)
apul by João (apple)
This means they have used the sounds they know and have attempted to spell the words on their own. :)
